We are a group of dedicated volunteers with many years of combined experience in greyhound adoption and living with greyhounds. Through our connections in the greyhound community, we became aware that many greyhound adoption groups in non-racing states have difficulty obtaining retired racing greyhounds.
We wanted to remedy that. Where an adoption group may be able to transport 2 or 3 dogs on a trip; we could transport 16 to 26 dogs at a time. We believe that if adoption groups have more dogs available to them, this would allow more retired greyhounds to be adopted into loving homes.
Although we no longer provide transportion services ourselves, we are still active in fundraising so that we can continue to help other greyhound adoption groups.
The V-LAP Experience
In 27 months of transporting dogs we...
Traveled 43,544 miles
Transported 391 hounds to 18 adoption groups
Made 72 drop-offs on 33 hauls
Met a lot of wonderful people and made many lasting relationships!
The bus was sold to the Greyhound Alliance for their Sunburst project. We felt that this would be the best way to continue our mission.
ABOUT THE SUNBURST PROJECT
The Sunburst Project was designed to move retired Florida racing greyhounds to adoption agencies in non-racing states. Greyhound Alliance opened its Sunburst Kennel at the Ebro Greyhound Park on August 1, 2011. Since then, the Sunburst Project has moved over 3,000 retired racing greyhounds from our Sunburst Kennel to 35 adoption groups in 22 states and Canada — an unprecedented record.
Ebro Greyhound Park donated the space and pays utilities for the Sunburst Kennel, which houses 70 greyhounds. Greyhound Alliance pays for all other expenses incurred while the hounds are in Ebro.
Greyhound Alliance’s Sunburst Project is a volunteer organization. It is funded and operates solely on donations and grants. 100% of your donation goes to help these wonderful hounds.
